The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) together with Where’s Everybody?, Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit and the Chamber of Scientists are organising Researchers’ Night at Villa Bighi in Kalkara, on Friday the 24th September 2010.

Researchers’ Night is a European event, first launched in 2005 to help the public understand the importance of research and to promote research careers. The event will be echoed in over 200 European cities and although the activities will vary from city to city, they will all take place on the night of the 24th September.

In Malta, the activities will take off at 6:30pm with a play for children, which will be both fun and educational as the actors will be explaining science concepts as they go along. There will be gifts for all the young participants. This will be followed by a party with delicious food and lots of fun.

After the play, the prizes for the best 3 submissions of the skola sajf 3D model competition will be awarded. Through Skola Sajf, the MCST and its partners launched a 3D model competition. All submissions will be displayed at Villa Bighi on the night.

At 7:45pm there will be a more grown up reception, where it will be possible to meet with researchers while enjoying good food and wine. Again, this will be held in the 17th century Villa and is open to all.

At 8:40pm Angie Laus will host a special Live TV broadcast from Villa Bighi. The programme will focus on the lives of researchers, while popular personalities will be competing against each other in fun scientific games.

So come and join in the fun, participation is free of charge!! We are looking forward to seeing you all in Kalkara on Friday the 24th September 2010.  For more details contact karen.fiorini@gov.mt or call 21249 200.

The event will be staged in over 200 European cities and although the activities will vary from city to city, they will all be staged on the night of the 25th September.

In Malta the activities will be launched by the opening of the European Corner at City Gate followed by a play for children between the ages 7 and 11. The play is being held at the Museum of Archaeology and will be followed by a number of discussions aimed at engaging youths and adults in interesting subjects such as human behaviour and the mysteries of the human mind, saving money while saving energy and the planet or applying science to creativity.

Researchers will be laying out the topic for discussion and the public will be encouraged to question and debate with the scientists in these Science Cafes. The establishments, namely; McDonalds, Café Merisi, NSTS and CityPro will be offering refreshments to all present. At around 20:40hrs Where’s Everybody presenters Angie Laus and Peter Carbonaro will be hosting a special edition of Pjazza in Freedom Square.

This programme will feature the usual bands and a number of games with a focus on the research being conducted in Malta. Researchers will explain the work they do and contestants will have to compete at recreating the science experiment. This week the MCST has also launched a poster competition which is open to Maltese and Gozitans of all ages to design a poster for next year’s Researchers’ Night.

Besides winning one of a number of prizes that will be awarded on the 25th September, the winner of the competition in Malta will then automatically be included in the larger European competition for the poster that will be used in all European Cities in September 2010.
