Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM)

The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST), MRAE, MEPA, WasteServe Ltd and Euro-MedITI Ltd have
worked together to set up a framework and launch projects related to the Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM).
The CDM relates to the introduction of technology to reduce CO2 emissions, where-in the gains made in emission reductions are than sold as credits on a commodity market - or retained to build a credit buffer against CO2 emissions.
Apart from introducing the framework for CDM, a pilot project has been launched by WasteServe Ltd at Iz-Zwejra Landfill. The project is directed to gain credits for the reduction of emissions stemming from gases from the said landfill.
On 20th April, the Consultant to WasteServe Ltd (Norbert Garbers) and the Consultant to MRAE (Ms Diana Smallridge) for the drawing up of a national strategy for CDM were in Malta and MCST took the opportunity to hold a half-day workshop from 9am at Villa Bighi which focused on the following:
