How Do Research and Innovation Lead to Entrepreneurship?
Back
The Malta Council for Science and Technology is organising a public discussion meeting about how small countries can steer research and innovation towards entrepreneurship at Villa Bighi, Kalkara on Wednesday 14th October 2009 between 10:30 and 11:30. The event will include a discussion with the minister the Hon George Pullicino, Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, whose portfolio includes responsibility for science and technology policy and research and innovation.
The event will focus on the potential that scientific and technical research has as an economic driver. The eco system needed for research and innovation to gain momentum and to migrate it to start-up companies will be discussed in detail.
Knowledge-intensive economic growth represents a major challenge for small countries with limited resources, a lack of critical mass and a poor culture for research and innovation. Support for new entrants is critical in the knowledge economy since these innovative-start-ups and spin-offs are created in response to emerging new technology niches and commercialization opportunities. To this end, they contribute directly to the drive towards the knowledge economy.
For Malta, this presents an opportunity to develop private sector R&D investments and capacities. If Malta is to develop its indigenous R&I capacity and attract more R&D-related Foreign Direct Investment, it needs to create a supportive environment for innovative start-ups and university spin-offs to emerge and grow. The economic benefit and Malta’s capacity in this area has already started to emerge. The National R&I funding programme which is managed by the Malta Council for Science and Technology, has already one prospective start-up company, three products on the path to commercialisation, research results winning international awards, a number of patents and a number of innovative products which are investigating patenting possibilities.
Registration is free of charge. For more information on the event, please contact Ms Christine Grixti email:Christine.m.grixti@gov.mt. Tel: 23602118
