Be a Scientist for a Night

The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) together with the Valletta Local Council, Where’s EveMCST Logorybody and the Chamber of Scientists are organising Researchers’ Night in Valletta on the 25th September 2009.  The first in a number of events related to this project was this week’s launch of the poster competition that is open to Maltese and Gozitans of all ages. The competition is for the design of next year’s advertising poster for Researchers’ Night 2010.

Besides winning one of a number of prizes that will be awarded on the 25th September at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta, the Maltese finalists will then automatically be included in the larger European competition for the poster that will be used in all European Cities in September 2010. vlc

What is the European Researchers’ Night?
Researchers’ Night is an invitation for the public to meet with local researchers. The initiative is a Europe-wide platform for the promotion of science and research, focusing on the individuals involved in this fascinating field. It is hoped that through direct interaction with scientists, people will get a better understanding of what they do, young people will be encouraged to consider science as a career and young researchers will see Europe as a dynamic and exciting place to carry out their research.

This initiative, first launched by the European Commission in 2005, has been highly successful throughout Europe. This year, the events will be staged in over 200 European cities and although the activities will vary from city to city, costhey will all be staged on the night of the 25th September.

In Malta the activities will be launched by the opening of the European Corner at City Gate followed by a play for children between the ages 7 and 11. The play is being held at the Malta National Museum of Archaeology and will be followed by a number of discussions aimed at engaging youths and adults in interesting subjects such as human behaviour and the mysteries of the human mind, saving money while saving energy and the planet or applying science to creativity. Researchers will be laying out the topic for discussion and the public will be encouraged to question and debate with the scientists in these Science Cafes. The establishments, namely; McDonalds, Café Merisi, NSTS and CityPro Cafe will be offering refreshments to all present.  we

At around 20:40hrs Where’s Everybody presenters Angie Laus and Peter Carbonaro will be hosting a special edition of Pjazza in Freedom Square. This programme will feature the usual bands and a number of games with a focus on the research being conducted in Malta. Researchers will explain the work they do and contestants will have to compete at recreating the science experiment.  If you think you can conjure up an image that defines Researchers’ Night visit,
