Journalists to Dare Scientists

Step into Science Journalism with the MY SCIENCE Programme for Young Journalists. Its aim is to bridge the scientific and journalistic communities and to enhance public understanding of science in everyday life. The MY SCIENCE Programme is open to all university students and graduates from 20 to 30 years age from EU member States and Associate Countries.

90 young journalists will have the chance to participate in the six-day workshops that will be held at different institutes specializing in a variety of fields of science, based in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy. The workshops will provide the possibility to gain and expand knowledge in the research field that is the most interesting to the applicant, while offering first hand information on leading scientific EU-funded projects.

The idea is to help develop editorial knowledge in research related areas and highlight techniques to best communicate the outcomes and relevance of the scientific projects to the public. However, more importantly these workshops offer the opportunity to get to know the professionals, and exchange best practices with them while establishing professional networks with new colleagues around Europe.

The workshops are being held in six different fields of science in the following laboratories:

·         Information & Communication Technologies, University of Vienna, Institute for Scientific Computing (Vienna)

·         Stem Cell and Nuclear Transfer Cloning Technologies at BioTalentum (Gödöllő, Hungary)

·         Renewable Energy at the European Academy EURAC, Institute for Renewable Energy (Bolzano/Bozen, Italy)·         Environment at the European Academy EURAC, Institute for Applied Remote Sensing (Bolzano/Bozen, Italy)

·         Humanities at the European Academy EURAC, Institute for Minority Rights (Bolzano/Bozen, Italy)

·         Modern Chemistry at the Institute of Chemical Technology (Prague, Czech Republic)

The Malta Council for Science and Technology encourages young journalists and students to apply for the event as there is a glaring need for this type of journalism in Malta. The campaign has just started, application deadline is 15th July 2009, workshops commence in December 2009.

The event organisers are offering €500 to cover some of the travel expenses. For further details visit:
